Abstract
THE fact that there is in every ocean a zone of minimum oxygen is of interest not only to the physicist and chemist but also to the biologist, and it is very desirable that we should know what influence this layer has on both the quantitative and qualitative distribution of the fauna, or, alternatively, whether this layer is to be attributed to the biological activity of the fauna and especially of the plankton. The facts that we possess regarding this problem are very impressive and are somewhat contradictory.
