Central nervous system infections in immunocompromised patients

Abstract

Central nervous system (CNS) infections in immunocompromised patients are associated with a poor prognosis. The present review discusses the epidemiology of severe CNS infections in the immunocompromised, with a major emphasis on HIV-infected patients, solid organ transplant recipients, and hematological patients. The goal is to update the general intensivist with a practical diagnostic approach, and to briefly discuss some of the most prevalent conditions.
