Obstructieve slaapapneu: pathofysiologie en gevolgen

Samenvatting

Obstructieveslaapapneusyndroom (OSAS) kan samengaan met hart- en vaatzieken, diabetes mellitus type 2 en veranderingen in het metabolisme. Het bij herhaling optreden van obstructieve apneus, met de daarbij behorende pathofysiologische veranderingen, zoals intermitterende hypoxie, verhoogde sympathicusactiviteit en verstoring van de slaap, speelt hierbij een belangrijke rol. Herkenning van OSAS bij patiënten die reeds behandeld worden voor één of meer comorbiditeiten of die een verhoogd risico hebben op deze ziekten is belangrijk om de gevolgen van de obstructieve apneus te helpen voorkomen.
