Im Juli 2013 kehrte Algeriens Staatspräsident nach einem Krankenhausaufenthalt in Frankreich in seine Heimat zurück. Sichtlich geschwächt bezweifeln viele eine vierte Kandidatur Bouteflikas bei den kommenden Präsidentschaftswahlen im April 2014. Ein echter Nachfolger ist in dem öl- und gasreichen Land Nordafrikas nicht zu erkennen. Mit der französischen Vergangenheitsbewältigung, dem Konflikt mit Nachbar Marokko, aufkommendem Terrorismus und der Angst vor einem Rückfall in die Bürgerkriegsära warten schwere Aufgaben auf den neuen Präsident der 32 Millionen Algerier.

Abstract

In July 2013 the President of Algeria returned from a three months hospitalisation in France. Many people doubt that he is going to run for a fourth term in the presidential elections of April 2014. But a probable successor is not in sight in the country, which has rich oil and gas resources. Many problems, so as coping with the French past, the conflict with neighbour Morocco, growing terrorism and the danger of a new civil war, are awaiting the new president of the 32 million Algerians.
