Zusammenfassung
Hintergrund
Abstract
Background
The development of health information on the Internet has an impact on patients, physicians and their relationships. Before consulting a doctor, patients frequently search for health information online and the trend is growing rapidly. This health-related Internet research is important for physicians as patients confront them with the outcome of the research and how physicians then deal with so-called Internet patients is highly relevant for the physician-patient relationship.
Methods
An explorative study illustrated physicians’ perceptions, attitudes and behavior in the context of contact with Internet patients. It also examined the general impression and evaluation, experiences, defined problem areas and contextual conditions. For this purpose, 14 German health professionals, 7 general practitioners and 7 oncologists were interviewed and the results were compared.
Results
The oncologists responded more concretely in many cases and have developed distinct strategies. It becomes evident that they in particular perceive this growing trend of Internet patients and adapt their own attitudes and behavior.
Outlook
Which communication and behavioral strategies do they successfully use, referring to their experience and estimation and how do their patients evaluate them? Comparing these perspectives on physicians’ communication in a qualitative-quantitative, paired survey aimes at revealing effective strategies which can be implemented in medical guidelines for the face-to-face consultation and in a supplementary online tool.
