Abstract
Strengthening the patient orientation is one of the four topics of the national cancer plan in Germany. The patient competence in oral cancer therapy (PACOCT) study addresses this topic with particular respect to the objective 12b of the cancer plan on improving patient competence through strengthening educative and communicative aspects in the preparation phase and in the course of oral cancer therapy. This approach is due to the increasing prescription and administration of oral agents for cancer treatment. The results of a previous cross-sectional survey have confirmed the need of action concerning the use of structured, comprehensive education tools and the further education of nurses and specialized medical staff in teaching and counseling activities in oral cancer care. This conclusion is consistent with findings and recommendations of international health services research and will be the focus of the interventional study starting in February 2014.
