Abstract

The analysis of mutants is one of the most powerful ways to determine gene functions. However, for mutants that are generated by random mutagenesis, it often takes years of laboratory work to discover the causative mutations. Recently the advent of next-generation sequencing techniques has made whole-genome sequencing a viable alternative to detect mutations. This approach can be used for basic research, but also for the identification of mutations in human genes causing heritable diseases.
