Abstract
The present article provides an overview of selected conceptual and practical aspects of crisis and risk communication. Crisis communication focuses on acute cases of damage and outbreaks which occur unexpectedly and require immediate response, such as the Legionella outbreak in Warstein in summer 2013. Web 2.0 and technological developments enable real-time and interactive public communication during the crisis communication lifecycle. In contrast, risk communication focuses on potential damages and the process of exchanging information among stakeholders about the magnitude, significance, and control of a risk.
