Photochemical characterization of bi-functional compounds containing indolinospiropyran and chalcone groups

Abstract

Two bi-functional compounds with a structure containing both a photochromic group indolinospiropyran and a photo-crosslinkable group chalcone connected by a soft spacer chain with alkyloxy and alkyl ester, or alkyldiester groups, were synthesized and the structures were confirmed with 1H NMR, FTIR, and UV–Vis spectroscopy. The bi-functional compounds were dissolved in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) or PMMA-co-4-hydroxychalcone methacrylate chloroform solution, and used to prepare photochromic PMMA films by a facile spin-coating method. Photocrosslinking reaction between the chalcone groups and photochromism of the spiropyran groups were accompanied under irradiation of 365 nm UV light. It was proved that the chalcone derivatives containing polymer films effectively retarded the decaying behavior of photochromism after photocycloaddition of the chalcone groups.
