We are calling for proposals of papers for a special issue of Educational Studies in Mathematics. The special issue will focus on affect in mathematical problem posing. Despite the interest in integrating mathematical problem posing into classroom practice, our knowledge remains relatively limited about the processes involved when problem solvers generate their own problems, the instructional strategies that can effectively promote productive problem posing, and the effectiveness of engaging students in problem-posing activities. In particular, we still know very little about the affective aspects of problem-posing processes. The importance of the integrative development of cognitive and non-cognitive competencies motivates this special issue’s focal question: How is problem posing in the teaching and learning of mathematics interconnected with affective factors such as motivation, engagement, beliefs, attitudes, values, emotions, feelings, mood, and self-efficacy? Based on current research on affect, in this special issue, we view affect as a system in that many constructs intertwine to make up the affective experience of a learner’s participation with mathematics, including emotions, attitudes, beliefs, values, and motivations.

The goal of the proposed special issue is twofold. On the one hand, through the inclusion of up-to-date studies on this issue, it aims to analyze the state of the art in research on affect associated with mathematical problem posing. On the other hand, by highlighting gaps in this field of research, the special issue will attempt to stimulate researchers to fill these gaps through systematic research that integrates advances in research on mathematical problem posing and research on the role of affect in mathematics education.

We invite proposals for papers that relate to affect in mathematical problem posing. The proposals can be up to 1000 words (excluding references) and should include the following:

  • Title of the paper and the names and affiliations of authors

  • A statement of the particular aspect of affect associated with problem posing that the submitted manuscript will analyze and of the contribution of the study

  • An outline of the study, including its goals, theoretical underpinnings, research design, and data analysis

  • A description of the context in which the research took place

  • A summary of key (possibly preliminary or anticipated) findings

Proposals must be submitted by January 15, 2019, to jcai@udel.edu and rozal@edu.haifa.ac.il. Authors will be notified of the outcome of their proposals by January 31, 2019. Submissions will be due on July 15, 2019. Following an internal (informal) review process involving the editors and other contributors to the special issue, the revised manuscripts will be sent for external (formal) review. We are anticipating a publication date of late 2020.
