Abstract
Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder often caused by an infection and usually treated with antibiotics. Symptoms are annoying and have to be managed promptly. This observational study carried out in pharmacies estimated the relevance of a product combining extracts of hawkweed (Hieracium pilosella L.), cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton) and orthosiphon (Orthosiphon stamineus Benth or Orthosiphon aristatus [Blume] Miq.) in the management of the symptoms of cystitis. A total of 65 questionnaires completed by women having taken the product during three days because of symptoms suggestive of cystitis for less than 48 hours was analysed. After three days of treatment (D4), disappearance of all symptoms (burning micturition, frequent urge to urinate in low quantity, cloudy and/or malodorous urine and pain in the lower abdomen) was observed in 72% (47/65) of the women; some symptoms persisted (with lower scores) in 28% (18/65) of the participants. The global score of the intensity of symptoms significantly decreased by 90% between D1 and D4 (p < 0.001). The repercussion of symptoms on the everyday life of the women was significantly lesser on D4. These results show the relevance of the management of the symptoms of cystitis with the combination of hawkweed, cranberry and orthosiphon. The product could relieve effectively the symptoms of cystitis while protecting the commensal flora.
