Abstract

The heptanuclear complex [(Zn7O2(OAc)10(dma)2] (dma = N,N-dimethylacetamide) was prepared sonochemically in 60 % yield by the reaction of zinc acetate dihydrate with N,N-dimethylacetamide in an appropriate molar ratio using dry methanol as a solvent, and characterised by m.p., IR, TG, FTIR, and single-crystal X-ray analysis. The X-ray crystallography revealed that the complex belongs to a monoclinic crystal system with space group C2/c with cell dimensions a = 18.5951(6), b = 10.6718(4), and c = 24.0520(8) Å, β = 102.948(2)°. Highly conformal thin films of zincite (zinc oxide) and manganese-doped zincite were fabricated on a gold interdigitated ceramic substrate from the heptanuclear complex, and a mixture of manganese acetate dihydrate and the complex in an appropriate molar ratio using the ultrasonic aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition technique. The size, shape, surface morphology, microstructure, chemical composition, and crystallinity of the resulting films were analysed by SEM/EDX and powder X-ray diffraction. Investigation of sensing properties of the deposited films reveals that both zincite and manganese-doped zincite thin films are sensitive to alcohol vapours at a concentration of 100 ppm.
