Electronic supplementary material

Below is the link to the electronic supplementary material. For comparison, all of the following segments demonstrate the patient self-feeding thin liquids via cup sip.

Supplementary material 1 (MP4 1820 kb). Segment 1 - FEES pre-treatment: Thin liquid bolus via cup sip dyed blue administered. Significant pyriform sinus residue, with no spontaneous attempt to clear, resulting in aspiration after the swallow on same pyriform sinus residue. Patient’s cough response ineffective to clear aspirate. At the time of this assessment the patient remained NPO

Supplementary material 2 (AVI 1856 kb). Segment 2 – VFSS pre-treatment: Multiple rapid irregular lingual movements occurring with the onset of the swallow response to thin liquid bolus resulting in dis-coordinated airway protection and penetration of the bolus

Supplementary material 3 (MP4 1608 kb). Segment 3 – FEES post-treatment: Please note the presence of a nasogastric tube in situ not present in the other two video segments. Significant improvement is noted in pharyngeal clearance of the bolus, which is consistent with improved tongue base retraction and ease of swallow initiation resulting in improved airway protection
