Abstract

During the ICEFISH cruise of 2004 13 specimens of the fish family Liparidae (Scorpaeniformes) were collected from Burdwood Bank and near South Georgia. These specimens, with the addition of three more from the King Edward Point Laboratory of the British Antarctic Survey, represent nine species. Two of these are new and are described herein: Careproctus stigmatogenus new species and C. maculosus new species; the second specimen of C. minimus Andriashev and Stein is reported and described, specimens of C. georgianus Lönnberg, C. falklandicus (Lönnberg), C. ?pallidus (Vaillant), Paraliparis copei gibbericeps Andriashev, P. gracilis Norman, and P. tetrapteryx Andriashev and Neelov are reported, and live color of C. georgianus, C. falklandicus, and P. tetrapteryx is described and shown.

I thank W. Dietrich for inviting me on the ICEFISH cruise (International Collaborative Expedition to collect and study Fish Indigenous to Subantarctic Habitats) that made this paper possible. S. Hawkins and K. Ross provided specimens from the British Antarctic Survey King Edward Point, South Georgia laboratory, and the crew of the RVIB NB Palmer managed the collecting activities that obtained all the new material. N. Chernova examined the holotype of C. cactiformis for me. S. Raredon and D. Simon provided radiographs. This work was supported by the National Systematics Laboratory of the National Marine Fisheries Service, NOAA, the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, NOAA, and the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Oregon State University. Cruise participation and expenses of the author were supported in part by National Science Foundation Grant OPP-0132032 to H. William Dietrich (Northeastern University).
