Zusammenfassung
Hintergrund
Abstract
Background
While biofeedback proved to be an efficacious treatment in the improvement of self-regulating abilities in a variety of mental disorders, there is a lack of evidence for eating and weight disorders. The present review aims to give a systematic overview about the existing literature on the efficacy of different biofeedback paradigms for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and obesity.
Method
Literature databases were searched using predefined search terms. Relevant German and English studies were identified.
Results
Out of 5 identified biofeedback studies 2 studies used electroencephalography, 1 study was based on heart rate variability and 2 studies were based on electrodermal activity. Studies investigated obesity (2 studies) and anorexia nervosa (3 studies). It was shown that biofeedback had specific effects on general and eating disorder psychopathology but not on weight status.
Conclusion
Although biofeedback was shown to have positive effects in anorexia nervosa and obesity, further randomized controlled studies are warranted to evaluate the efficacy of biofeedback in eating and weight disorders.
