Verwendung des DICOM- Standards in heterogener Umgebung Inkompatibilität oder Interoperabilität?

Zusammenfassung

Fragestellung: Der seit 1993 eingeführte DICOM-Standard ist heute bei vielen bildgebenden Geräten etabliert. Erfahrungen mit DICOM-Implementationen und Anforderungen an zukünftige Entwicklungen sollen dargestellt werden.

Methodik: Zuerst wird kurz auf die Entwicklung des DICOM-Standards eingegangen. Basierend auf allgemeinen Erfahrungen wird anhand von Beispielen auf unterschiedliche Probleme in der Installation, Programmierung und Betreuung eingegangen.

Ergebnisse: Um eine Vielzahl von Applikationen unterstützen zu können, sind im Standard neben obligatorischen auch optionale Datenmodelle und Funktionalitäten vorgesehen. Die verfügbaren Optionen verleiten nun zu spezifischen Anwendungen, die nicht mehr der Grundidee des Standards entsprechen. Inkompatibilitäten sind die Folge.

Schlußfolgerungen: Für einen funktionalen Kommunikationsfluß werden bestimmte DICOM-Serviceklassen als notwendig erachtet. Hierzu gehören DICOM-Basic Worklist, Storage Commitment und Performed Procedure Step. Ein konstruktiver Ansatz, die erwünschten Interoperabilitäten in freiwilliger Absprache zwischen Herstellern und Nutzern zu erzielen, wird aufgezeigt.

Summary

Purpose: The DICOM standard, introduced in 1993, is now established in many of today’s image modalities. Experiences with DICOM implementations and requirements for future developments are described.

Methods: First a brief summary of the development of the DICOM standard is given. Based on general observations, different problems with installation, programming and maintenance are outlined.

Results: The standard consists of mandatory and optional information models and functionalities to enable the use and development of a broad spectrum of applications. But the available options lead to specific applications not compatible with the basic idea of the standard.

Discussion: For functional communication distinct DICOM services are necessary. This includes DICOM Basic Worklist, Storage Commitment and Performed Procedure Step. A constructive way to achieve interoperability through voluntary arrangements between manufacturers and users will be shown.
