Abstract
In Germany, childhood varicella vaccination is a controversial issue. One year ago, the Permanent Vaccination Commission (STIKO) proposed this vaccination strategy. Therefore, a short review seems appropriate. Since the time period is too short for an assessment of the epidemiological effects, data from the USA can be utilised. In the United States infants have been vaccinated against varicella for about 10 years. A conclusion by analogy of the epidemiological situation of both countries is possible under certain conditions, so that an outlook of the effects of childhood varicella vaccination in Germany is possible.
