Summary
This article comprises a report on some results of a sample-survey among 952 inhabitants of the Netherlands aged 20–64 years. The article presents the opinions of the Dutch with respect to the decline in the number of the births and the prospect of a diminishing population in the future. Attitudes with respect to what the role of the government should be, in particular the acceptance of a population policy, are also looked into.
In contrast to what has been observed in other Western European countries, the decline in the birth rate in the Netherlands is only considered in a negative light by a small minority. There are strongly conflicting views concerning the prospect of a dimishing population, with just as many supporters as opponents. An increase in the population is only considered desirable by very few people however. The increasing ageing of the population is recognized as an important issue.
Although nearly half of the respondents do not generally reject the principle of a population policy, a large majority condemn interference in fertility trends. Ignorance with regard to the form which such a policy could take seems to play a significant part in this, however.
