Abstract
The concentration and the specific activity of free proline are significantly increased in the livers of rats injured by acute and chronic treatment with the necrogenic agent, dimethylnitrosamine. 4 hours after the injection of ethionine at the dose which does not cause liver necrosis, the specific activity of free proline was significantly higher while the amount was unchanged. The dynamics of the changes in the specific activity of the free proline pool up to 24 hours after injecting the label are different in normal and chronically injured livers. The importance of relating data on protein synthesis in an injured tissue to a uniform pool size of free amino acids is demonstrated.
