Nasal reconstruction 150 years ago: Aesthetic and other problems

  • Published:
Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Abstract

Plastic surgeons today are understandably concerned with the final “aesthetic” results in totally reconstructed noses, no matter how many procedures are necessary to achieve results in this fascinating surgery. Many of us take the modern techniques of reconstructive nasal surgery for granted. Most of us do not have a very thorough knowledge of the history of our specialty, and we are unaware of the problems that faced the plastic surgeon 150 years ago or more, when reconstructive surgery of the nose was first introduced into Europe. Among all the many problems that confronted the surgeon in those days, the “aesthetics” of the reconstructed nose were bothersome and not always satisfactory, as can be seen in the writings of Dieffenbach [7, 18–20] and his contemporaries.
