Translator's note: The present text is based on “Über Wandlungen der Angriffslust” fromÜber den Prozess der Zivilisation: Soziogenetische und psychogenetische Untersuchungen (Basel: Haus zum Falken, 1939; Frankfurt am Main: Suhrkamp, 1976), vol. I, pp. 263–283. The translation was first prepared by Johan Goudsblom and Rod Aya, Goudsblom being mainly responsible for fidelity to the German meanings, Aya for the formulation and editorial arrangement of the English text. This draft was then reviewed and thoroughly revised by the author, who introduced numerous changes (many of which depart from the German original) to make the finished version conform to his present views. Hence this essay is not a tight-fitting translation, but the author's reconstruction of his meaning in another language.
