Summary

The amino acid sequence of a part of the coat protein of the TMV-strain U2 is established. This completes the full sequence (Wittmann, 1965) as shown in Fig. 6 leaving only the pos. 106–113 to be determined. Now the comparison between the coat proteins of the strains vulgare, dahlemense and U22 is possible. U 2-protein differs from vulgare in 35 positions and from dahlemense in 40 positions. The consequences of these great differences of primary structures are discussed in part II.
