Integrating business ethics into a graduate program

Abstract

Five faculty members in the College of Business at Northern Illinois University received a grant from the James S. Kemper Foundation to integrate ethics into the graduate business curriculum. This was the second phase of a comprehensive program to integrate ethics into the business curriculum. Each faculty member taught a required course in the MBA program. The faculty members represented each of the five functional departments in the College of Business.

This paper describes the ethics content, materials, and approaches that were used to cover ethics by each of the five faculty members. Hopefully, this description will help other faculty and universities integrate ethics more effectively into the business curriculum.

Charles R. Gowen III is an Associate Professor of Management. His teaching has focused on business ethics, quality, and corporate strategy for the MBA-level and undergraduate capstone courses. He has authored several articles on those topics from research and work experience with Fortune 500 corporations.

Nessim Y. Hanna is a Professor of Marketing. He has authored over sixty articles on business topics and has three published textbooks in marketing. He is a consultant to a number of foreign companies and universities abroad.

Larry W. Jacobs is Associate Professor of Operations Management and Information Systems. His research is focused in the development of mathematical models for labor and operations scheduling and his work has appeared (or is forthcoming) in Management Science, Naval Research Logistics, Decision Sciences, Omega, European Journal of Operational Research, and several other journals.

David E. Keys is the Household International Professor of Accountancy. He has published numerous articles in the Journal of Accounting Research, The Accounting Review, Journal of Cost Management, Management Accounting, and other journals on cost management and other topics. He has consulted with several Fortune 500 and smaller companies.

Donald E. Weiss is an Associate Professor of Finance and primarily teaches financial management. His most recent publication is “An Examination of the Time Series Properties of Beta in the Market Model,” Journal of the American Statistical Association, Vol. 86, No. 416, pp 883–890, December 1991, co-author with Wei-Chien Chang.
