Abstract

For the first time, phytoplankton has been collected from the extreme environment of a crater pond of a pingo (Arctic mud volcano), situated in Svarlenhuk, Northwest Greenland. It contained a bloom of a special morphotype of the silica-scaled chrysophyte Mallomonas acaroides. This morphotype proved to be widely distributed in Northwest Greenland, between 69 and 73°N.
