Een huisarts weet soms van een patiënt dat hij zich inlaat met stafbare feiten. De patiënt kan bijvoorbeeld huur- of uitkeringsfraude plegen, kinderporno downloaden of zonder geldig rijbewijs een auto besturen. Moet een huisarts naar aanleiding hiervan actie ondernemen richting de politie of een andere instantie? Maakt het daarbij uit of de huisarts deze kennis heeft verkregen van de patiënt zelf of van anderen? Wat is in die situaties de betekenis van het beroepsgeheim? Wat noteert de huisarts wel of niet in het dossier? Wij behandelen hier de belangrijkste do’s en don’ts.

General practitioners sometimes know that a patient has committed a criminal offence, such as rental or benefit fraud, downloading child pornography, or driving without a valid driving licence. Is the GP obliged to report these cases to the police or other authorities? Does it make a difference whether the GP has acquired this information from the patient or another person? What is the role of doctor-patient confidentiality in this context? What information should the GP enter into the patient’s medical record? This article discusses the most important do’s and don’ts.
