Abstract
Extracorporeal hemodialysis is the most frequently used renal replacement therapy in the world. Because of increasing age and comorbidities of the dialysis population, technical innovations of the hemodialysis therapy have been necessary and widely introduced into clinical practice. The present review describes the principle of hemodialysis and deals with its modifications such as high-flux hemodialysis, hemofiltration, and hemodiafiltration. Furthermore, improvements in dialysis therapy are discussed in detail under the topics of (a) monitoring extracorporeal therapy, (b) biocompatibility and efficiency of dialysis membranes, and (c) optimization of the microbiological quality of dialysis fluid.
