This issue of the HSS Journal features the results of several clinical research studies which explore a wide variety of topics. Two papers address femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). One suggests that the severity of clinical presentation often fails to correlate with the severity of the radiologic features of this syndrome, and the other presents cases in which iliopsoas impingement can result in complaints suggesting FAI. Four papers address topics in knee surgery ranging from reports on the intermediate-term results of a new posterior-stabilized knee design and a unicompartmental arthroplasty. Boettner and his coauthors provide further evidence against the practice of donation of autologous blood in elective knee replacement surgery. This work expands on their previous report regarding this practice prior to total hip arthroplasty. Toth and her colleagues document the lack of effectiveness of capsular shrinkage as treatment for shoulder instability over long-term follow-up. Of particular note is a report from our anesthesia department on efforts to reduce postoperative delirium in geriatric patients undergoing elective total joint replacement.

The issue provides two review articles concerning the success of the use of locking plates in the treatment of fractures in osteoporotic bone and a thorough review of the management of ankylosing spondylitis. Maher presents her exciting work exploring the development of scaffolds for bioengineering of meniscal implants. Of special interest is a report from the 2010 meeting of the International Society of Orthopedic Centers.

As part of our continuing efforts to improve the appeal of the HSS Journal, we have adopted the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors regarding the disclosure of potential conflicts of interest. We have also modified our requirements of authors regarding the format and style of manuscripts, and we now provide templates to assist authors in manuscript preparation which can be found in our published instructions for authors.
