ESR study on scavenging effect of nicotine on free radicals

Abstract

Smokers have less risk to catch degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease that are both correlated with enhanced oxidative stress. The scavenging effect of nicotine on free radicals was investigated by electron spin resonance techniques. It was found that the scavenging effect of nicotine on hydroxyl radicals and superoxide free radicals was higher than that of vitamin C. It was also found that nicotine could scavenge free radicals in gas-phase cigarette smoke. The data indicate that nicotine may be a potential antioxidant.
