Neue Studiendaten legen nahe, dass die Pathogenese des Typ-2-Diabetes anders verläuft als bisher angenommen. Sollte das so sein, müsste die Therapie die basalen Insulinspiegel im frühen Stadium senken und nicht steigern. Das ließe sich durch kohlenhydratarme, protein- und fettreiche Ernährung erreichen. Auch müssten der Einsatz von Sulfonylharnstoffen und die frühe Insulintherapie überdacht werden.
