Samenvatting

Benauwdheid is een ruim begrip met meerdere betekenissen. De ‘top vijf’ van benauwdheid bij kinderen is verschillend bij jonge en oudere kinderen. In dit artikel wordt deze beschreven, waarbij uitgegaan wordt van de dagelijkse praktijk en nieuwe inzichten aan de orde komen. De top vijf bij kinderen jonger dan 5-6 jaar is: 1. viral wheeze of astma; 2. virale bronchiolitis; 3. pseudocroup; 4. aspiratie van corpus alienum; 5. epiglottitis. Bij oudere kinderen is deze: 1. astma; 2. gevolgen van actief en passief roken; 3. disfunctionele ademhaling; 4. atypische infecties; 5. congenitale afwijkingen.
