Abstract

The purple color of a urine bag without modification of the color of the urine, from a patient with a urinary catheter drainage system, is known as Purple Urine Bag Syndrome. It is related to a succession of enzymatic degradations of an aminoacid called tryptophan and to the presence of certain bacteria in the urine. It occurs predominantly in elderly, disabled women. We report the case of a tetraplegic woman, chronically catheterized because of a neurologic bladder disorder. This syndrome is benign and rare. It does not justify systematic antibiotherapy but deserves to be known.
