Zusammenfassung
Der Anteil der Weltbevölkerung, der dauerhaft an Unterernährung leidet, ist seit den 70iger Jahren gesunken, in absoluten Zahlen jedoch steigt die Anzahl der Hungernden an; im Jahr 2009 lag sie über einer Milliarde Menschen. Aufgrund der Zunahme der Weltbevölkerung wird die landwirtschaftlich nutzbare Ackerfläche pro Person weltweit von etwa 0,4 ha pro Person im Jahr 1960 auf etwa 0,1 ha pro Person im Jahr 2060 sinken. Vor diesem Hintergrund ist es völlig unverständlich, wenn immer noch versucht wird, den Klimawandel und seine Auswirkungen auf die „Food Security“ (globale Temperaturerhöhung, Erhöhung der Meeresspiegel, Verschiebung oder Wegfall von landwirtschaftlichen Nutzflächen etc.) in Abrede zu stellen; jetzt weisen nicht mehr nur die Trends langjähriger Temperatur- und Niederschlagsmessungen, sondern auch bereits einsetzende Veränderungen in Flora und Fauna darauf hin, welche zukünftige Wechsel ihrer Lebensumstände auf die Menschheit zukommen wird, die irreversibel sein werden, wenn nicht jetzt gehandelt wird. Am Phänomen der „Biokraftstoffe der Ersten Generation“ wird aufgezeigt, wie vermeintlich gut gemeinter Aktionismus die Problematik der „Food Security“ (siehe auch Schmidhuber und Tubiello in Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 104:19703–19708, 2007) verschärfen kann. Wird nicht ernstlich etwas gegen den Anstieg des Gehalts der Luft an Klima-relevanten Gasen (u. a. Kohlendioxid, Methan, Lachgas) unternommen, so wird es in absehbaren Zeiträumen (a) zur gravierenden Minderung der „Food Security“ für große Teile der Menschheit kommen, (b) zur Migration hungernder Menschen in Gebiete, wo noch ein ausreichendes Nahrungsangebot erwartet wird, und (c) schließlich zu gesellschaftlichen (kriegerischen) Auseinandersetzungen zwischen den Staaten, welche die „Food Security“ für ihre Bevölkerung noch gewährleisten können, und denen, die aufgrund des Klimawandels über nicht mehr genügend landwirtschaftliche Anbaufläche zur Versorgung ihrer Bevölkerung mit Lebensmitteln verfügen.

Aus der Pachtung von Ackerflächen in anderen Staaten und der zukünftigen Problematik, bei dort möglicherweise herrschenden Hungersnöten die eigene Ernte zwangsläufig mit Waffengewalt außer Landes schaffen zu müssen (Bommert W (2010) Das Fundament brökelt. Die Zeit, Nr. 34, S. 22), könnte sich zukünftig eine Situation entwickeln, zu deren Befriedung derzeit noch kein politischer Lösungsansatz vorliegt.
Die Regierung in Bangladesch versucht in Indien einen Ausgleich für die ausgefallenen 65000 Tonnen russischen Weizen zu bekommen. Ägypten als weltweit größter Importeur bezieht fast 60 % seines Weizens aus Russland. Auch die Türkei sorgt sich um ihre Weizenversorgung (Bommert W (2010) Das Fundament bröckelt. Anthony Giddens (ehemaliger Direktor der London School of Economics und Fellow des King´s College in Cambridge) und Martin Rees (Rektor des Trinity College in Cambridge und Präsident der Royal Society in London) weisen eindrücklich darauf hin, dass „die wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse über den von Menschen verursachten Klimawandel und die Gefahren für unsere gemeinsame Zukunft, die mit diesen Veränderungen verbunden sind, in ihrem Kern gültig bleiben.“ Daran ändern auch „die veröffentlichten E-mails“ nichts, „die Wissenschaftler der Universität von East Anglia einander vertraulich geschrieben hatten,“ und die „nach Ansicht von Kritikern zeigten, dass Klima-Daten manipuliert worden waren. Der Fall bekam außerordentliche Aufmerksamkeit – ebenso wie Irrtümer in den Veröffentlichungen des Zwischenstaatlichen Ausschusses für Klimaänderungen der Vereinten Nationen (IPCC).“ (Die Zeit, Nr. 43, 21. Es soll hier nicht verschwiegen werden, dass es – über die realen Hinweise auf die Folgen eines Klimawandels hinaus – auch substantiell sehr plausible Vorstellungen darüber gibt, wie sich – nach dem Überschreiten bestimmter Schwellenwerte [z. B. Temperaturerhöhung um 2 bis 3 °C im Vergleich zum Beginn der Industrialisierung] – in Feedback-Szenarien das globale Klima irreversibel verändern könnte: (a) Aufgrund des Vierten Sachstandberichts des Weltklimarates (IPCC 2007; ref. Dyer 2010) ist davon auszugehen, dass (a) sich einerseits die Verdunstungsrate der erwärmten Ozeane erhöhen wird, (b) damit infolge das Abschmelzen der Eisflächen in der Arktis und an der antarktischen Küste unvermeidlich einsetzen würde (ref. Hempel und Piepenburg 2010) (damit aber auch die Anzahl der arktischen Polarstürme zurückgehen wird [Zahn und von Storch 2010]), (c) – nach Verlust der hoch reflektierenden Eisflächen, welche 70 % der einfallenden Sonnenstrahlung direkt wieder zurück in den Weltraum reflektieren – die dann offenen Meeresflächen etwa 94 % des Sonnenlichts absorbieren und damit das Meerwasser aufheizen, (d) infolge dieser Klimaerwärmung große Mengen des fossilen Methanhydrats (Clathrate) aus dem Polarmeeren und den Gebieten des Permafrostbodes freigesetzt werden könnten, (e) sich damit die Aufnahmekapazität der Meere für CO2 halbiert und die globale Temperatur sich um 6 bis 12 °C erhöht und eine Anhebung des Meeresspiegels um 70 bis 80 m unausweichlich sein würde.

Entsprechend wird die Debatte in Deutschland auch unter dem Slogan „Tank oder Teller“ geführt (Dyer 2010).
Sheenan (2009) weist außerdem auch auf den in Teilen sachlich nicht gerechtfertigen Gebrauch der Ergebnisse aus den LCA-Analysen zur Verwendung von Biodiesel im politischen Raum hin.
Allerdings hat nachweislich in der Vergangenheit erhöhte Lebensmittelproduktion nicht überall zur Linderung der Hungersnöte weltweit beigetragen (Webb 2009).
Nach Angaben der FAO stagniert die globale Entwicklung der Weltfischerei seit 1990 bei etwa 90 Millionen t pro Jahr; 25 % der global verfügbaren Fischbestände sind in ihrer Existenz bedroht. Nach Angaben der WWF ist der prozentuale Anteil an überfischten Beständen seit 1974 kontinuierlich gestiegen (9 % im Jahr 1974; 18 % im Jahr 1990; 25 % im Jahr 2006).
Wie durchaus nicht unumstritten solche Klima-schonenden neue Verfahren sein können, zeigt die Diskussion um Solarmodule unter Verwendung von Cadmiumtellurid-Verbindungen, bei denen nicht sichergestellt sein soll, dass im Schadensfall Cadmium – eingestuft als hochgiftig – freigesetzt werden kann (Oberhuber N (2010) Feuer auf dem Dach. DIE ZEIT Nr. 51, S. 32).
Bewusst wird hier daher auf eine Erwähnung und Darstellung der verschiedenen Arten der Energiegewinnung verzichtet. Um diesem Aspekt gerecht zu werden, ist hier nicht der Raum bei der Behandlung des Leitthemas „Food Security“. Bei weitergehendem Interesse sei daher auf die relevanten Links im Internet verwiesen.
Dass die „Bioökonomie“ den proklamierten Königsweg zur Sicherstellung der zukünftigen Lebensmittelversorgung darstellen soll, steht hier nicht zur Diskussion, sondern ihre Kurzdarstellung soll nur einen Denkanstoss geben, wie die Menschheit schon jetzt auf diese Problematik reagieren soll, um den Problemen der Nahrungsmittelversorgung in der Zukunft erfolgreich begegnen zu können.
Auch auf die politische Durchsetzbarkeit solcher wissenschaftlich basierter Empfehlungen kann hier aus Platzgründen nicht eingegangen werden.
