Abstract
The birthweights, the incidence of complications during delivery, and the present health are reported for 133 children of 58 women with jaundice during at least one pregnancy. The causes of jaundice were recurrent and non-recurrent cholestasis of pregnancy, and infectious hepatitis.
Deliveries complicated by jaundice and/or itching were associated with a lower birthweight (median 3170 g) than deliveries after entirely uncomplicated pregnancies (median 3450 g). Meconium staining of the amniotic fluid was found in 22% of deliveries with itching and/or jaundice, and in 9% of uncomplicated ones. Three children, whose mothers had jaundice during delivery, died from asphyxia. Itching or jaundice ending before delivery did not seem to have influenced the fate of the children. The findings were similar, whether the mothers had had recurrent or non-recurrent itching and/or jaundice, i.e. they were not primarily related to the cause of these symptoms, but to the period of pregnancy in which they appeared.
In general, itching or jaundice during pregnancy was not found to have influenced the children's future health.
