Summary
Many crops have conspecific or congeneric weedy relatives with which they are sympatric in part at least of their range. The crop may have been domesticated from plants similar to the modern weedy types; or the modern weeds may be derived from the crop (often through natural hybridisation); or crop and weed may have diverged simultaneously from a shared wild ancestor. Gene flow between the crop and its companion weed may be limited; or considerable but predominantly in one direction; or extensive in both directions, crop to weed and weed to crop. Phylogenetic relationships and the extent of gene exchange between crop and weed affect the amount of genetic diversity and the likelihood that weed populations will provide a source of useful characters for improvement of the crop, hence are relevant in collection and conservation of crop genetic resources. Gene exchange and the strength of the selection pressures operating to keep crop and weed distinct also affect the probability that genes of adaptive value to crop and weed respectively will be linked, which can greatly hamper use of weedy relatives in plant breeding programmes.
