Caring for self and others: Second generation Polish American elders in an ethnic club

Abstract

This article reveals the process and findings of a 3-year field experience at a Polish American ethnic club in Southwest USA. Precipitated by a clinical problem in the care of an elderly Polish American man, the purpose of this study was to describe the meaning of caring from the perspective of community-dwelling, second generation Polish American elderly. Ten categories and eight themes were inferred from content analysis of transcribed interviews with 7 key informants and represent the elderly-club members' view of caring. Recommendations include nursing care and research strategies with elders and suggested hypotheses for future study.
