Structure of Higher Education System
Description
Higher education is offered by universities, polytechnics, teacher training colleges, and a technical institute. They come under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education.
Stages of studies
University level first stage
Undergraduate
The first stage of higher education leads, after a period of four years, to the Bachelor's degree. A Diploma in Engineering is conferred after three years' study at undergraduate level. A Certificate in Agriculture and Home Economics is awarded after two years' study at undergraduate level.
University level second stage
Graduate
The Master's degree is awarded after two years' study following the Bachelor's degree.
University level third stage
Doctor of Philosophy
The PhD is conferred after a minimum of three years' study following the Bachelor's degree and the submission of a thesis. A Postgraduate Diploma in Education is awarded after one year's postgraduate study.
