Abstract

Alcohol use disorder is a complex biopsychosocial diagnosis that impairs not only the consumer, but also the people around him or her. The available literature majorly focusing upon the spouses of these patients, there exists a paucity in research regarding its ill effects on other populations of caregivers. Hence, the present review aims to synthesize relevant findings in regards to alcohol related disorders, highlight the gaps in existing literature, and briefly identify the treatments available. Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta analysis (PRISMA, 2020) guidelines, were used as a methodology for systematic review of the indian literature available in various open access platforms. A total of 100 studies were identified, and 19 of them were included for the review. The results of this systematic review are presented in various themes and sub-themes that highlight the psychosocial impact of caregiving. The paper will also discuss certain implications for further research and intervention. No risk of bias was confronted with; however, the limitations of this review are mentioned.

Notes

  1. Identification of studies using PRISMA guidelines; studies were first identified from the databases using certain keywords, followed by screening of abstracts. The screened papers were then checked for eligibility using the inclusion criteria, and a total of 21 studies were selected for the review.

  2. Based on the studies selected, common themes and sub-themes were identified that entail the psychosocial impact on the caregivers of alcohol abuse/dependent patients. These themes are discussed in detail in the further sections.
