Preclinical evaluation of Vallaris solanacea (roth) kuntze stem for its antiulcer and antioxidant activity in wistar albino rats

Abstract

In the present study we evaluated the antiulcer and antioxidant activity of methanolic extract from stem of the plant Vallaris solanacea (roth) Kuntze using various experimental models in Wister albino rats. The methanolic extract was prepared for evaluation of antiulcer activity with dose [3.2 milligram (mg)/kilogram (kg) and 6.4 mg/kg] by using models–pylorus ligation (PL) and ethanol induced gastric ulcer in rats. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by estimation of lipid peroxidation and catalase activity in the ethanol induced gastric ulcer model in rats. The results obtained from present study revealed that Vallaris solanacea methanolic extract (VSME) decreases the ulcer index significantly (p < 0.001) compared to the positive control group (Ranitidine 30 mg/kg) in both models at the both dose level. VSME also showed significant ulcer inhibition at both dose levels. In PL model of ulcer VSME decreased the volume of gastric juice, pH, total and free acidity. VSME also shown significant (p < 0.001) antioxidant activity by reduces the lipid peroxidation (LPO) and increases the catalase (CAT) activity. Present study shows that the VSME possess dose dependent antiulcer and antioxidant activity. However, further studies are required to focus on the molecular mechanism of responsible phytochemical constituents and establish exact mode of action involved in its antiulcer and antioxidant action.
