Re-irradiation of central nervous system tumors

Abstract

Recurrence or progression of disease is a common occurrence for some CNS tumors and is an important therapeutic dilemma. Disease progression can lead to worsening of neurological symptoms, including potential neurologic death. Therefore, local control of brain tumors in previously irradiated patients is of critical importance clinically. This poses a therapeutic challenge for clinicians when considering re-irradiation in terms of efficacy and potential toxicity. Multiple re-irradiation strategies for the management of recurrent or progressive disease have been evaluated. This report reviews data for efficacy and safety of re-irradiation in managing recurrent or progressive CNS (brain and spine) tumors.
