Estimation of the Duration of a Rectangular Optical Pulse in the Case of Unknown Pulse and Background Intensities

We synthesize and analyze the quasilikelihood and maximum-likelihood algorithms for estimating the pulse duration. The estimation-accuracy loss because of the a priori unknown pulse and background intensities is found.
