We are saddened to learn of the death of our long-standing colleagues, Dr. Denis Collins on 25 February 2021 and Dr. Patrick O’Neill on 1 October 2021. Both worked on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Academic Ethics since the journal outset.

Dr. Denis Collins was named Professor Emeritus after his retirement in May 2020 at Edgewood College, where he was a very active scholar in the field of business ethics. In 2003, he was the guest editor of the Special Issue “The Longest Faculty Strike in U.S. Higher Education: Perspectives from Key Participants” (vol. 1, iss. 3) in the Journal of Academic Ethics. Denis was also well-known for his great leadership to advance Edgewood College’s achievements in ecological, social and economic resilience, as well as in community support. Along with a strong and honest voice and a high commitment, he made a significant contribution to scholarship of business ethics. Please see the website of Edgewood College for more information about his scholarship and life.Footnote 1

Dr. Patrick O’Neill was Emeritus Professor in the Department of Psychology, Acadia University. He had expertise in community psychology and ethical decision-making. Patrick was also passionately engaged and committed to research ethics, particularly in the social sciences. As Psychology Prof. Doug Symons outlined in his review, “the themes of fairness, equity, diversity, and inclusiveness that Pat advocated for throughout his career, long before these terms were in common use. Pat’s graduate-level course in ethics was a tour de force”. Please see the website of Acadia’s Psychology Department for more information about his scholarship and life.Footnote 2

The scholarly community mourns the profound loss of Dr. Denis Collins and Dr. Patrick O’Neill, whose contributions to academia and their respective fields are held in the highest esteem. Their passing leaves an intellectual void, and their absence will be keenly felt by fellow journal members and scholars alike.
