Dr Haruta became Director of the new Research Institute for Green Technology in April 2001. Previous to that he was Director of the Department of Energy and the Environment at the Osaka National Research Institute (AIST), Japan, where he was a pioneer of research into catalysis by gold deposited on metal oxides.
