Abstract
The present paper is an overview on the distribution, both in time and space, of the large sized deer (tribe Megalocerini) referred to the so-calledverticornis group, in Italy. Three generic name have commonly been used for these deer:Megaloceros, Megaceroides andPraemegaceros. The validity ofPraemegaceros is here supported. As a matter of fact representatives ofMegaloceros genus, asM. giganteus, are morphologically distinct from theverticornis species and its allied, and it is now well established that the two belong to separate evolutionary lineages. Similarly, the nameMegaceroides should be limited to the endemic speciesM. algericus, which is restricted to the Late Pleistocene localities of Northern Africa. This work is moreover, an occasion to briefly review the systematic position of this endemic species. GenusPraemegaceros is fairly diversified, comprising at least 4 strictly related species:P. obscurus, P. verticornis, P. dawkinsi andP. solilhacus. They are widespread in the European continental localities during a time interval of about 1 Myr, spanning from the middle part of Early Pleistocene to the late Middle Pleistocene. In Italy the first stages of the evolution of these deer are in particular well documented, with the phyletic lineageP. obscurus — P. verticornis testified by an abundant fossil record.
