Conclusions
A preliminary survey of the therapeutic usefulness of Dulcolax,® a new laxative, leads to the following conclusions:
-
1.
The medication is effective.
-
2.
The medication is nontoxic in our experience.
-
3.
Laxation but not catharsis is induced.
-
4.
Nursing care is diminished in preoperative, preroentgenographic, and presigmoidoscopic preparation.
-
5.
Dulcolax® laxation for x-ray not only satisfactorily evacuates the colon but does not introduce air shadows.
-
6.
Dulcolax® preparation for sigmoidoscopy not only affords a cleansed rectum but does not appear to irritate the mucosa.
-
7.
Dulcolax® medication may be of considerable assistance to the patient with permanent colostomies—in some, irrigations may be obviated, in others, irrigation is facilitated.
-
8.
Another effective laxative has been added to the medications useful in the palliation of chronic constipation; its ultimate usefulness here requires further scrutiny.
