Summary
Dominance in a food-competition situation and in spontaneous encounters was determined in the homecage of paired male rats. Food-competition was induced by releasing the food piece between the two animals or by holding it in the hand. The primary measurement was that of the eating time. In spontaneous encounters the submissive posture was estimated. The experiments have shown that a rank difference in food-competition could be established, when the food piece was released, this depending largely on differences in reaction-times. A rank difference could not be established, however, if the food piece was alternated to the rats. If the piece was held in the hand, a rank difference was found if the type and intensity of the aggressive effort to prevent the other animal from eating was also measured.
