Summary
Fifty patients were treated for one week, and 30 patients for three weeks, with nose drops to reduce swelling. All patients of both groups suffered from perforation of the ear drum. Fifteen controls, also with perforations, were used for purposes of comparison.
The eustachian tube opening pressure was measured by means of a four channel recorder attached to a pressure monitor inserted in the external auditory meatus and made air tight by means of an inflatable rubber sleeve. Measurements were made before, and 15 and 60 min respectively after application of the nose drops. These investigations took place on the 1st, 7th, 14th, 21st days. The following variations were observed:
-
1.
Fifteen min after application of nose drops. Increased air flow through the eustachian tube during the entire three week investigation period.
-
2.
Sixty min after application of nose drops. Decreased air flow through the eustachian tube, after 2–3 weeks of therapy.
-
3.
Increased resistance to air flow through the eustachian tube proportional to the length of the nose drop application period. This occurred even though the effectiveness of the nose drops against swelling appeared to the effective 15 min after application.
