Abstract

In recent years there has been considerable interest in the influence of hemodynamics on vascular wall biology and in particular on the genesis of atherosclerosis, a disease which occurs in the central and larger arteries. This interest has centered on the vascular endotheliem, i.e. the monolayer which forms the inner lining of a blood vessel. As such the vascular endothelial cell (EC) interfaces directly with flowing blood, and if there is an influence of hemodynamics, it is believed that EC must be a mediator of any such effect.
