Zusammenfassung

Nach den neuesten Schätzungen der Vereinten Nationen und der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (UNAIDS 1996) leben z. Z. etwa 22 Mio. mit dem HIV-Virus („human immunodeficiency virus“) infizierte Menschen in den verschiedensten Teilen der Welt (etwa 21 Mio. Erwachsene und fast 1 Mio. Kinder). Mehr als 90% davon leben in den Entwicklungsländern und fast zwei Drittel in den südlich der Sahara gelegenen Teilen Afrikas.
