Chronic pain impacts 25–35 % of youth (Perquin et al. 2000) and is commonly associated with disturbed sleep. Sleep difficulties among youth with chronic pain can include insufficient sleep duration, nighttime awakenings, insomnia symptoms, frequent daytime napping, poor perceived sleep quality, and poor sleep habits (Law et al. in press; Meltzer et al. 2005; Palermo et al. 2011; Tsai et al. 2008; Valrie et al. 2007).
Introduction
Sleep disturbances are common among healthy adolescents and include obtaining an insufficient amount of nightly sleep (i.e., <8 h), greater delays in the timing of sleep onset, longer sleep onset latencies (i.e., >30 min to fall asleep), an increasing discrepancy between weekday and weekend sleep patterns (i.e., later bedtimes and waketimes on weekends), and spending more time sleeping during the day (National Sleep Foundation 2006).
