Finnland gehört mit seinen 5,2 Millionen Einwohnern zusammen mit Schweden, Dänemark, Norwegen und Island zur skandinavischen Länderfamilie1. Diese Länder verbindet eine gemeinsame Geschichte, wobei Dänemark und Schweden in der Vergangenheit die dominanten Nationen waren, und Island, Norwegen und Finnland deren abhängige Territorien. Finnlands Vergangenheit unterscheidet sich jedoch vom Rest der skandinavischen Länder, da das russische Zarenreich direkten Einfluss auf die finnischen Geschicke nahm und Finnland erst 1917 eine unabhängige Republik wurde. Dennoch führte die skandinavische Verwurzelung dazu, dass auch viele politische Institutionen denen der anderen skandinavischen Länder ähneln (Elder/Thomas/Arter 1988). Insbesondere trifft dies auf das Parteiensystem zu (Berglund/Lindström 1978).
